How the Calculations Work

The calculator performs three main calculations:

  1. Area Calculation: Based on the selected shape and input dimensions
  2. Volume Calculation: Area × Thickness (with appropriate unit conversions)
  3. Weight Calculation: Volume × Density

Let me demonstrate with examples for each shape:

Example 1: Rectangular Area (Imperial Units)

Let’s say you have:

  • Length: 30 feet
  • Width: 20 feet
  • Thickness: 4 inches
  • Density: 150 lbs/ft³ (default)

Step 1: Calculate Area Area = Length × Width Area = 30 ft × 20 ft = 600 square feet

Step 2: Calculate Volume First, convert thickness from inches to feet: 4 inches = 4 ÷ 12 = 0.333 feet

Volume = Area × Thickness Volume = 600 ft² × 0.333 ft = 200 cubic feet

Step 3: Calculate Weight Weight = Volume × Density Weight = 200 ft³ × 150 lbs/ft³ = 30,000 lbs

Convert to tons: 30,000 lbs ÷ 2,000 = 15 tons of asphalt

Example 2: Circular Area (Metric Units)

Let’s say you have:

  • Diameter: 10 meters
  • Thickness: 15 centimeters
  • Density: 2,403 kg/m³ (default)

Step 1: Calculate Area Radius = Diameter ÷ 2 = 10 ÷ 2 = 5 meters Area = π × Radius² = 3.14159 × 5² = 78.54 square meters

Step 2: Calculate Volume Convert thickness from centimeters to meters: 15 cm = 15 ÷ 100 = 0.15 meters

Volume = Area × Thickness Volume = 78.54 m² × 0.15 m = 11.78 cubic meters

Step 3: Calculate Weight Weight = Volume × Density Weight = 11.78 m³ × 2,403 kg/m³ = 28,307 kg

Convert to metric tons: 28,307 kg ÷ 1,000 = 28.31 metric tons of asphalt

Example 3: Trapezoid Area (Imperial Units)

Let’s say you have:

  • Top width (parallel side 1): 15 feet
  • Bottom width (parallel side 2): 25 feet
  • Height (distance between parallel sides): 40 feet
  • Thickness: 3 inches
  • Density: 150 lbs/ft³ (default)

Step 1: Calculate Area Area = ((Top width + Bottom width) ÷ 2) × Height Area = ((15 ft + 25 ft) ÷ 2) × 40 ft Area = (40 ft ÷ 2) × 40 ft Area = 20 ft × 40 ft = 800 square feet

Step 2: Calculate Volume Convert thickness from inches to feet: 3 inches = 3 ÷ 12 = 0.25 feet

Volume = Area × Thickness Volume = 800 ft² × 0.25 ft = 200 cubic feet

Step 3: Calculate Weight Weight = Volume × Density Weight = 200 ft³ × 150 lbs/ft³ = 30,000 lbs

Convert to tons: 30,000 lbs ÷ 2,000 = 15 tons of asphalt
